EU Demands "Urgent" Lebanon Ceasefire, Warns on Key Oil Route
The European Union has called for an "urgent cessation of hostilities" in Lebanon, as fighting between Hezbollah and Israel intensifies. The EU's foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, made the statement after a meeting of the bloc's foreign ministers. He said the situation at the Israel-Lebanon border is "very dangerous." Separately, the incoming EU foreign affairs representative, Kaja Kallas, highlighted another regional flashpoint. She emphasized the critical need for safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz and for freedom of navigation worldwide. The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow sea passage near Iran. It is a vital global shipping route for oil and gas. The dual statements link two major security threats: the escalating conflict in Lebanon and the risk to international shipping lanes. The EU warns both could further destabilize the Middle East and the global economy.
