Hungary Accused of Spying for Russia Inside EU Meetings
France has publicly called Hungary a "traitor" to the European Union. The accusation follows the leak of recorded phone calls.
The recordings appear to feature Hungary's Foreign Minister, Péter Szijjártó, speaking to Russia's Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov. In the calls, Szijjártó reportedly shared confidential details from closed EU summits.
He is also alleged to have offered to send EU documents to Moscow through Hungary's embassy there. Additionally, the minister seemingly coordinated with Russia to obstruct EU sanctions decisions.
The revelations have caused a major diplomatic crisis within the bloc. They suggest a member state secretly aided Russia while the EU united against the war in Ukraine.
Hungary has not yet verified the authenticity of the recordings. The country's government has frequently opposed EU sanctions on Russia.
