ICC to Rule on Duterte Trial for Drug War Killings
The International Criminal Court (ICC) will decide by April 28 whether to put former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on trial. He faces charges of crimes against humanity for his deadly "war on drugs."
Judges at the global court will issue a written ruling. They must determine if there is enough evidence to proceed. The charges relate to thousands of killings during Duterte's presidency from 2016 to 2022.
Even if the trial is approved, legal experts warn it will move slowly. They describe the expected pace as "glacial." A final verdict could take many years.
Duterte was surrendered to the ICC in March. The court investigates grave crimes like genocide and crimes against humanity when national courts are unwilling or unable to do so.
