Wisconsin Mayor Who Removed Ballot Box Will Not Face Charges

A Wisconsin mayor will not be charged after removing an official ballot drop box just months before the 2024 presidential election. Special Prosecutor Michael Graveley announced the decision on Tuesday. He said a review found insufficient evidence to support criminal charges against Wausau Mayor Doug Diny. The incident occurred in April. Diny, who was a mayoral candidate at the time, removed a ballot drop box from outside a city library. He later returned the box to a different city building. Graveley’s report concluded the mayor’s actions did not meet the legal standard for theft or misconduct. The decision ends the possibility of criminal prosecution in the case. Local election officials have since reinstated the drop box at its original location. It will be available for voters in the upcoming elections.
