Ceasefire in Peril: Israel Bombs Lebanon, Iran Blocks Oil
A fragile ceasefire in the Middle East is under immediate threat, just one day after it was agreed. Major disagreements over whether the truce includes Lebanon have led to new violence and economic retaliation.
Iran and Pakistan, who brokered the last-minute deal on Tuesday, state that the ceasefire covers Lebanon. Israel's Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, rejects this. On Wednesday, Israeli forces launched their heaviest attacks of the war on over 100 targets in Lebanon, killing at least 254 people.
In response to what it calls an Israeli breach of the ceasefire, Iran has now halted the passage of oil tankers through a key waterway. Former U.S. President Donald Trump, who initially stayed silent, has called the Lebanon fighting "a separate skirmish" and not part of the deal.
The conflicting interpretations and renewed attacks have put the fate of the two-week truce in serious doubt.
