U.S. Lawmakers Demand Probe Into Chinese-Linked Nonprofits
Top U.S. lawmakers are calling for an investigation into several American nonprofit groups. They allege the organizations are being used by the Chinese Communist Party to influence U.S. politics.
In a formal request, senior members of the House of Representatives urged the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the Treasury Department to launch the probe. The request targets groups known as "hometown associations." These are traditional groups formed by immigrant communities from specific regions.
The lawmakers claim these associations have been co-opted. They say the goal is to promote Beijing's political interests and interfere in American elections. The request suggests these activities may violate the nonprofits' tax-exempt status.
The call for an investigation highlights growing scrutiny of Beijing's overseas influence operations. It focuses on alleged efforts to mobilize Chinese diaspora communities in the United States.
The IRS and Treasury Department have not yet publicly responded to the lawmakers' request.
