North Korea Fires Fifth Missile Barrage, Escalating Tensions
North Korea launched several short-range ballistic missiles early Wednesday, its fifth such test in recent days. The move directly follows a promise by the South to seek reconciliation, escalating military tensions on the Korean peninsula.
South Koreaโs Joint Chiefs of Staff reported the launch. The missiles were fired from near Wonsan on North Korea's east coast around 8:50 a.m. They flew approximately 240 kilometers (150 miles) before landing in the sea.
This latest test comes just one day after another detected launch. It follows a major policy speech by South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol on Tuesday. In that address, he offered large-scale economic aid to the North if it begins denuclearization.
South Korean and U.S. intelligence agencies are conducting a detailed analysis of the launches. Military officials in Seoul have strengthened their surveillance and remain on high alert.
