Retired U.S. military officers are sounding an alarm. They say Donald Trump's latest threats against Iran could themselves be war crimes. The former president said Tuesday that if Iran ignored his demands, "a whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again." Retired Admiral Michael Smith responded with concern. He once commanded a U.S. Navy carrier strike group. "I have to hope that this is bluster," Smith said. "He must understand that those types of threats themselves are likely war crimes." Other military observers have expressed similar fears. They warn that publicly threatening the destruction of a civilization violates international laws of armed conflict.
