Austria's Far Right Blocks Ukraine Aid, Citing Refugee Fears
Austria's government will not provide emergency winter aid to Ukraine this year. The decision follows opposition from the far-right Freedom Party (FPÖ), a key partner in the ruling coalition.
The FPÖ argued that supporting Ukraine's energy infrastructure could prolong the war. The party claims this would increase the likelihood of a future refugee crisis in Europe.
This comes as Ukraine reports intense Russian attacks on its energy system. Ukrainian officials state that Russia has damaged or destroyed 256 energy facilities since March.
Austria's chancellor confirmed the aid blockage. He stated that all coalition partners must agree for such aid packages to proceed.
The decision affects a planned Austrian contribution of approximately 10 million euros. This funding was intended to help Ukraine repair power grids and heating systems before winter.
